Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), the world's most famous cricket-playing club and owner of Lord's, has deployed Sophos Anti-Virus with Sophos PureMessage for Windows/Exchange to protect the company's desktops and email gateway from viruses, Trojans, spyware and spam. The system was provided by Sophos business partner Softcat, a recent winner in the Sophos Partner Awards 2005.
While MCC joined in the celebrations following England's outstanding Ashes triumph over Australia, it recognised that it couldn't afford to relax and let down its guard off the pitch. Organisations now face a greater threat than ever before from virus writers, spammers, and increasingly, targeted attacks by financially motivated cyber criminals. In light of this, MCC decided to review its existing security software, evaluating solutions from a number of leading IT security vendors.
"As perhaps the world's most high-profile cricket club, security is paramount, and it's not just the cricket pitch that needs protecting against unwelcome intruders," said Paul Long, help desk manager at MCC. "It's vital that MCC's computer networks are properly secured, so we wanted a solution that would give us an all-encompassing approach to controlling viruses and spam. We were impressed by the pre-sales support provided by Softcat and Sophos, and given the pricing and capability of the product, we felt that the Sophos solution was ahead of the game."
MCC is deploying Sophos's anti-virus and anti-spyware protection on the desktop computers of 200 users, while Sophos's integrated virus, spam and spyware protection, PureMessage, will scan and filter incoming email at the gateway. This multi-tier protection against emerging threats provides automatic updating and ease of management, while MCC will also receive ongoing support from Softcat as well as Sophos's own customer support service.
"MCC has recognised that the threat from cybercriminals is not limited simply to banks or large multinationals, and that any organisation is a potential target," said Andrew Gregg, account manager at Softcat. "By utilising this Sophos technology, MCC now has a consolidated solution that can help defend against all manner of threats, as well as improving internal efficiency by filtering out inappropriate and unwanted mail content."
