Critical Path and Sophos partner to deliver new, carrier-class anti-spam solution
Integrated, heuristics-based software enables mobile operators and fixed-line service providers to offer premium service with low cost of ownership
San Fransico, CA /Lynnfield, MA - Critical Path, Inc. (Nasdaq: CPTH), a global leader in digital communications software and services, and Sophos, a world leader in protecting businesses against spam and viruses, today announced a partnership enabling Critical Path to offer integrated heuristics-based anti-spam software with the Critical Path Communication Platform. Critical Path(tm) Anti-Spam Powered by Sophos(tm) PureMessage combines Critical Path's highly scalable messaging software, which has the lowest cost of ownership in the industry, with Sophos's carrier-class PureMessage anti-spam technology. This all-software solution complements Critical Path's existing anti-spam offering, giving wireless and wireline carriers the most comprehensive options for offering premium, revenue-generating services to their consumer, mobile professional and small business customer subscribers from a single integrated platform.
Critical Path Anti-Spam Powered by Sophos PureMessage enables telecommunications operators to offer advanced protection of subscribers' email, mobile email and MMS messages. The anti-spam software runs in the carrier's network without requiring software to be installed on any subscriber's desktop, laptop, mobile device or web browser, providing subscribers with 24x7 protection regardless of how they access the messaging services. In addition, it automatically detects, tags, quarantines and blocks spam to prevent unwanted messages from reaching subscribers' mailboxes and devices, saving time, resources and bandwidth for carriers as well as subscribers. The Critical Path Communications Platform and Sophos's anti-spam technology are specially optimized to work together to deliver the scalability, performance and reliability needed for high-volume deployments. This provides a cost-effective way for carriers to offer dramatically improved service for subscribers.
"Protecting subscribers against the onslaught of spam has become a crucial part of any messaging service," said Richard Jacobs, chief technology officer at Lynnfield, MA-based Sophos, Inc. "Sophos's highly flexible, heuristics-based approach to identifying spam, combined with Critical Path's high performance messaging platform, provides a tightly integrated solution that allows carriers to protect wireless, web and desktop subscribers from a single platform."
Featuring Sophos technology, Critical Path's Anti-Spam solution delivers the most advanced spam detection technology in the industry through its unique two-phased message deconstruction and analysis process. As messages are scanned, each is decomposed into multiple forms to expose filter-evading tactics, and to identify the source and destination data. The message information is then analyzed to assign a spam probability. Spam probability is determined by evaluating the message structure, characteristics, content, quality of sender and intended destination information, and affiliation with current spam campaigns. The Anti-Spam engine is updated automatically on the carrier's servers without interruption in service to subscribers. This ensures subscribers are protected from the latest spammer activity across their various messaging devices and applications without the administrative burdens of installing software or managing upgrades.
"The addition of Critical Path Anti-Spam Powered by Sophos PureMessage to our modular platform gives carriers and service providers powerful, highly responsive spam protection that can be leveraged across multiple applications," said Michael Serbinis, chief technology officer of Critical Path. "Critical Path's integrated platform makes it easy for operators to offer a high-value, revenue-generating service that is rapidly becoming a requirement for mobile as well as Internet-based messaging."
Critical Path is offering the Sophos PureMessage technology on Linux, Solaris and HP-UX server platforms. For more information, please visit www.criticalpath.net/.
